]]>I used to think it was snow I loved to photograph. But over the years I've come to realize it's snow storms that I truly love, particularly after dark. The more snow forecast, the more excited I get. New York City never seems more magical, no matter how late the hour or how far I walk. All the normal rules and logic of city life are blown aside, and all the imperfections are blanketed, abstracted or rendered anew.

]]>As Black Lives Matter protests raged across the U.S, in 2020 there was a lot of debate in the photo community about the questions and ethics of blurring faces to keep protesters safe from police recognition software and retribution.

Rather than blurring faces, which I feel mutes the power and emotion of the protests, I have done a series of obfuscation experiments, images edited to protect protestor identities while still having visual impact.

In some, I have mixed up the faces, in others I have replaced the faces of protesters with the faces of police who covered the event so the cops are forced to profile themselves.

]]>The pier at Coney Island always seems a world apart from the crowded madness of the beach and the amusement park that you can see below and in the distance. It's a place where innocence, reflection and romance have a little more room to breathe. There are photos of some of the people I've encountered on, under and going off the pier.

]]>As an adopted child, I’ve always felt a strange affinity with and affection for bastard works of art that arrive into the world unintended.

One of the most striking examples that caught my eye in my everyday life are the wild collages that occasionally pop up on the walls in New York’s Subway stations.

These unintentional works of uncertain DNA exist beneath the glossy advertisements that line the subway station walls.

Unlike their showy brethren, these complex and fascinating creations have been blindly crafted via a collaboration of time, paint, decay, successive advertising posters, artists and vandals. They sell nothing but abandon.

Between September 2012 and June 2013, I visited each subway station multiple times in New York City's five boroughs to document the works collected in this series.

This was a journey of self-discovery fueled by an interest in abstract beauty and a desire to preserve ephemeral works that are quickly painted over, plastered with new ads or eradicated altogether as subway stations are renovated as part of a system wide upgrade plan.
