As Black Lives Matter protests raged across the U.S, in 2020 there was a lot of debate in the photo community about the questions and ethics of blurring faces to keep protesters safe from police recognition software and retribution.
Rather than blurring faces, which I feel mutes the power and emotion of the protests, I have done a series of obfuscation experiments, images edited to protect protestor identities while still having visual impact.
In some, I have mixed up the faces, in others I have replaced the faces of protesters with the faces of police who covered the event so the cops are forced to profile themselves.
